Why Your Pet Needs Flea & Tick Prevention
You might not think much of it if you see your pet scratching an itch — but if that itch is caused by fleas or ticks, your beloved friend ‘s health could be at risk. Fleas and ticks are notorious for spreading serious communicable diseases while also promoting dermatitis and possible skin damage leading to infection. The best way to cope with these risks is to eliminate them by seeking out flea & tick prevention. Your veterinarian is more than happy to provide tick and/or flea treatment options to protect your pets.
Fleas, Ticks & Your Pet
Fleas and ticks are something of a year-round problem in the Central Texas area. That’s because we get relatively high humidity and heat for much of the year, providing the perfect incubation conditions for these pests. Fleas and ticks may not look like they could do much harm, but they’re a legitimate menace to animal health.
Fleas can infest pets in large numbers, in some cases drawing enough blood to cause serious anemia in small or health-challenged pets. Their bite can cause allergic reactions which in turn compel animals to scratch, bite or chew the skin, creating open wounds that can get infected. Even worse, fleas can transmit tapeworms, typhus and plague.
Ticks pose a similar menace. These tenacious animals cling onto your pet, transmitting diseases such as ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. To make matters worse, fleas and ticks carried by your pet can lay eggs in your home; “putting the bite” on your human loved ones as well.
